19 East 82nd Street
Originally constructed in the 1890s, 19 East 82nd Street is a magnificent single-family mansion formerly owned by Warren Adelson, the art dealer. Mr. Adelson purchased the building in 2006 and created a large commercial art gallery on the lower levels with marble floors, wood paneling, and high ceilings. Recognized as the international authority on John Singer Sargent, he showcased paintings in his gallery by American artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, Winslow Homer, and Georgia O’Keefe. In 2011, Mr. Adelson approached our team when he decided to move to a smaller space on Park Avenue. We were able to quickly identify the Cy Twombly Foundation as a prospective buyer, who had been seeking a space to celebrate the late artist’s work. The foundation paid $27.75 million to acquire the property in 2012.
Just down the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 19 East 82nd Street proved to be an ideal location for the Cy Twombly Foundation with the artist’s sketches and paintings being part of the museum’s collection. Offering nearly 11,000 square feet of space, this 25-foot-wide Beaux Arts townhouse currently serves as an education center and small museum for the foundation.
